Before implementing new tools or technologies, Iago insists on something fundamental: thoroughly analyzing the company’s processes.
Identifying bottlenecks, wasted time, or tasks that do not add value allows you to prioritize where to act first.
Without this preliminary analysis, there is a risk of digitizing tasks that do not solve real production problems.
This approach is especially important in industrial digitization projects in SMEs, where resources are limited and every investment must add tangible value.
Eliminating paper as the first step toward digitization
The first digital transformation project at MRF focused on logistics and shipping, with a very clear goal: to eliminate the circulation of paper between departments.
The process reduced manual tasks, prevented errors, and streamlined the flow of information between areas.
Although it was initially thought that implementation would take several months, the change was much faster than expected because the team itself saw that the new system simplified their daily work.
Real-time data allows for faster decision-making
In manufacturing environments with very tight delivery deadlines, having information quickly is key.
MRF works with numerous references and hundreds of orders per month, which requires a quick response to production incidents.
Therefore, one of the objectives of digitizing industrial SMEs should be to capture data in real time, allowing deviations, machine downtime, or quality incidents to be detected before they affect the customer.
Integrating and centralizing data makes it truly useful
As sensors, monitoring systems, and plant applications are incorporated, a new challenge arises: data becomes scattered across multiple platforms.
MRF ended up with information spread across different monitoring systems, making it difficult to analyze it collectively.
That is why one of the key steps in its digital evolution has been to centralize that information in a single environment in order to:
- visualize operational data
- analyze production indicators
- correlate variables such as production, energy, and resource consumption
This step allows us to move from simple data capture to analysis and exploitation to improve efficiency.
Digitization without major investment is possible in an SME
One of the clearest messages from the episode is that digitization without major investment is possible, even in small companies.
Many projects can start with simple tools, Excel prototypes, or small internal applications that allow processes to be validated before investing in more complex developments.
In addition, there are now numerous public grants and financing programs that facilitate the development of Industry 4.0 projects in SMEs.

Iago is very clear on this point: it makes no sense to digitize simply because the technology exists.
The goal of digitization should always be to improve the company’s operations:

- improve coordination between departments
- facilitate decision-making

When technology does not solve a real problem, it ceases to be innovation and becomes unnecessary complexity.
